Leicestershire Cares Visit
A team for the charity “Leicestershire Cares” come along to the Hub to spend a day experiencing woodland management, charcoal making and wood processing. This served a double purpose for the team who used it as a team event and a fact-finding session to see what we do, what we can offer corporate groups and whether this would be suitable for their corporate partners. The day went very well with some lovely feedback…….
“We had a brilliant day, and I've had nothing but positive feedback.
Please pass our thanks to the team for giving us a wonderful day, I will forward the photos and film when they are finished
We will be in touch regarding a visit with one if our groups as I feel they would benefit greatly from a day like yesterday”
Thank you to the Heartwood team who supported the event.

Radio Leicester awards
Mark, Helen and Kev spent an hour at BBC radio Leicester being interviewed ahead of the awards later in the year. We have several places at the awards ceremony which is being held in Leicester on the evening of the 1st September. If anyone would like to go along to represent us please let me know.

Works Team
A dedicated team have completed work at a second Park for South Derbyshire District Council. Trees planted at Eureka Park in Swadlincote during the winter had “tree pit” dug around them to help them in their early growing years. The pits are filled with bark chips to allow water to penetrate to the roots and to remove competition from grass and weeds. It also ensures strimming and mowing do not accidentally damage the delicate trunks. We are paid for this work by SDDC will all funds going towards maintaining the group

The Hub Update
Along with TOITW sessions and a number of individual charcoal burns, the regular “Tuesday Time Outs” have been running for a few weeks now, giving us a good steady supply of charcoal at this busy time. The use of the Dragons had a short break for a couple of weeks due to concerns over the proximity of the chimneys to the new shelter, but this has now been resolved with a slight shuffle of them to the other side of the shelter. We are now back in full production. Join the TOITW WhatsApp group if you want to keep informed of Tuesday sessions and any other Hub news.
The acquisition of a rather large shed has also taken place. It was a bit of a monster to dismantle, transport and re-erect on site, but it has proved to be a valuable asset providing much needed storage space – and a great view out of the window for any bird or wildlife watchers!
We are also trying to get a longer gentle run into the Christmas rush, so material gathering and preparation has started. It’s a good time for any new ideas, so if you spot anything either online or locally please let us know. We will be having a stall at the Christmas Market at Rosliston Forestry Centre this year so we’re looking to offer a wide variety of goods. We’re always looking for help to make items, some of which can be done at home in a spare hour or two, so please let us know if you can help or would like to know more.
There has also been lots of work carried out at the Hub with timber processing, dead hedge building at the car park entrance and charcoal wood stacking – we have finally caught up with the charcoal wood from last season!
